FAQ – All information for you
Oncological rehabilitation plays an important role in coping with the physical and psychological consequences of cancer.
After cancer treatment, the after-effects and side effects can be manifold, from exhaustion and hair loss to physical limitations.
The psychological stress caused by the disease and the therapies should also not be underestimated.
At the NUHR Medical Center in Lower Austria, oncological rehabilitation begins with a thorough examination, on the basis of which an individual treatment plan is developed together.
Our oncological rehabilitation offers a variety of therapies and measures that are tailored to the individual needs of patients.
In addition to a comprehensive initial medical examination, this also includes a final medical examination, dietary assessment with BIA measurement and the creation of a nutritional concept, sports science assessment including lactate determination, therapeutic gymnastics in individual therapy and manual regulation therapy.
Our competent team of doctors and therapists will provide you with comprehensive support and create a familiar, soothing atmosphere.
The inpatient stay includes accommodation in a single room and gourmet full board with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Patients can also use the spa area with Finnish and bio saunas.
Oncological rehabilitation is particularly useful for patients who have completed their primary cancer treatment and want to improve their physical and mental health.
These rehabilitation measures are appropriate for various types of cancer, including colorectal cancer, breast cancer, gynecological tumors, testicular cancer, lymphoma, lung cancer, bone marrow transplantation and other tumor diseases.
Through targeted rehabilitation, patients can improve their quality of life and cope better with the after-effects of the disease and treatment.
Oncological rehabilitation primarily aims to comprehensively improve the patient’s quality of life.
This includes both physical and psychological aspects of recovery and integration.
The main objectives include:
- Improving the quality of life
- Promotion of physical fitness, vitality and independence
- Treatment of side effects of oncological therapies, such as pain therapy, exercise therapy and treatment of lymphoedema
- Increase in emotional well-being and self-esteem
- Reduction of fatigue and exhaustion
- Recognizing and treating secondary symptoms such as restricted movement, scar pain and nerve damage
- Coping with psychological problems such as anxiety disorders and depression
- Improvement in pain management
- Nutritional advice and training
- Promotion of physical, emotional and mental stability
There is also a special focus on psycho-oncological care to counteract the psychological stress caused by cancer.
The aim is to make it easier for patients to return to their private and professional lives.
The stay in a pleasant environment, usually in nature, as well as the wide range of physical and psychological therapy options also contribute to recovery and well-being.
Chemotherapy, as one of the primary treatment methods alongside radiotherapy and surgery, is a central component in the fight against cancer.
The cytostatic drugs used in it specifically attack the reproduction cycle of tumor cells in order to stop their growth and ultimately cause them to die.
However, healthy cells also suffer from the effects of these drugs, which can lead to stressful side effects such as nausea, vomiting, inflammation of the mucous membranes, blood formation disorders, hair loss and fatigue syndrome.
The chemotherapy period is extremely stressful for patients, both physically and emotionally.
In addition to the physical challenges, it is also a mental strain.
For this reason, many patients benefit from subsequent oncological rehabilitation, which helps them to regain their strength and get back to everyday life and work.
During the rehabilitation phase, patients learn to cope with their illness in the best possible way and look to the future with optimism, which can have a positive impact on their quality of life.
It is particularly important that oncological rehabilitation supports the success of the therapy and reduces the risk of a relapse.
Rehabilitation after chemotherapy usually lasts three weeks, although it can be extended if necessary.
There is no standardized rehabilitation, as each stay is individually tailored to the patient’s needs.
Radiotherapy has proven to be an effective method in the fight against tumors.
Around half of all cancer patients undergo radiotherapy during the course of their treatment, either as the sole treatment method or in combination with other therapeutic procedures such as chemotherapy or surgery.
However, despite its effectiveness, this treatment is often associated with considerable stress, both physically and psychologically.
Many patients experience only minor impairments during the radiation phase, but physical and emotional exhaustion can often manifest itself after the therapy has been completed.
Chronic exhaustion (fatigue), in particular, is a common late consequence of cancer treatment.
Subsequent rehabilitation after radiotherapy aims to help those affected to overcome these states of exhaustion and restore their quality of life.
The choice of the best oncology rehabilitation clinic depends heavily on the patient’s individual needs and preferences.
The clinic of choice should be tailored to the patient’s specific cancer and support their rehabilitation goals.
The personal life situation also plays an important role: some patients prefer physical and emotional distance from their familiar surroundings, while others want to take a companion or their children with them.
The clinic should also offer an environment in which patients feel comfortable in terms of age, religion and culture.
A successful oncological rehabilitation program not only includes medical care, but also a pleasant atmosphere.
