The cross with the cross
Inflammation of the spine should be taken seriously. They can be very painful, considerably restrict everyday life and, in the worst case, lead to permanent damage. This is why rapid and targeted treatment is particularly important. At the Nuhr Medical Center, we take a lot of time for your complaints and develop a therapy concept for you that combines modern medicine, rehabilitation measures and personal care. We want to help you regain your mobility and improve your quality of life in the long term, even in the case of complicated illnesses.
What is vertebral inflammation?
Spondylitis is an inflammation in the area of the vertebral bodies, the intervertebral discs or both structures at the same time. Experts speak of spondylitis, discitis or spondylodiscitis, depending on the location. The inflammation can attack the bone and soft tissue and, if not recognized and treated in time, can lead to serious complications. These include tissue destruction, abscesses in the spinal canal or, in rare cases, even neurological deficits if nerves or the spinal cord are affected.
What are the causes of vertebral inflammation?
The most common cause is an infection with bacteria that enters the spine via the blood. The source of the infection often lies elsewhere in the body, for example in the urinary tract, the skin, the respiratory tract or in the dental and jaw area. In rare cases, the spread of germs can also occur after operations or the insertion of implants. In addition to bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites can also play a role, although this is much rarer.
Who is particularly at risk?
Certain risk factors increase the likelihood of developing vertebral inflammation. These include
- a weakened immune system, e.g. due to chronic illnesses or certain medications
- Diabetes mellitus
- old age
- existing infections in the body that have not been adequately treated
- previous operations on the spine or the use of foreign material (such as screws or implants)
- intravenous drug use or prolonged hospitalization
The good news is that with the right therapy and a well-coordinated rehabilitation plan, many courses of the disease can be brought under control.
What are the typical symptoms of vertebral inflammation?
The signs of vertebral inflammation often develop slowly and are therefore often only recognized late. Many sufferers initially report severe back pain that cannot be explained by an injury or physical strain. As the disease progresses, the following symptoms may occur:
- Fever, night sweats and a general feeling of illness
- Exhaustion and decreasing physical resilience
- Numbness, tingling or even paralysis if nerves near the inflammation are affected
- Abnormal inflammatory values in the blood such as an elevated CRP or an accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate
If the disease progresses, pus may accumulate in the spinal muscles or in the spinal canal. These complications are medical emergencies and must be treated immediately.
How is vertebral inflammation diagnosed?
Clarification of vertebral inflammation begins with a detailed medical consultation. The current symptoms, possible sources of infection and known previous illnesses are recorded in detail. This is followed by further examinations. These include laboratory analyses, in which inflammation values such as CRP and erythrocyte sedimentation rate are checked in particular. At the same time, it is checked whether there is any evidence of bacterial or other pathogens in the blood.
Imaging procedures are also used. X-rays are used for an initial assessment of the spinal column structure, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is particularly good at visualizing inflammatory changes in the area of the intervertebral discs and soft tissue. If bony changes are suspected, a computer tomography (CT) scan can be helpful. In complex or unclear cases, a PET-CT is sometimes also performed to detect systemic inflammatory foci in the body.
In many cases, additional blood cultures are taken or tissue samples are taken to identify the exact pathogen.
How is vertebral inflammation treated?
The treatment of vertebral inflammation always depends on the individual course and severity of the disease. At the Nuhr Medical Center, we take a close look, listen and work with you to develop a treatment concept that is effective and can be easily integrated into your life.
Conservative treatment
In many cases, vertebral inflammation can be treated without surgery. Long-term antibiotic therapy plays a central role here. It usually begins as an infusion and is later continued in tablet form. The therapy usually lasts several weeks and aims to completely remove the infection from the body.
To allow the affected vertebral segment to recover, it is immobilized with an orthosis or a corset. This gives the spine the necessary stability and supports the healing process. Pain medication ensures that you can feel as comfortable as possible despite the restrictions.
We also actively support you during this phase. With gentle exercise therapy, individual care and regular check-ups, we ensure that you feel safe and regain your health step by step.
Surgical treatment
If the inflammation is already very advanced, abscesses have formed or the spine has become unstable, surgery may be necessary. In this case, inflamed tissue is removed and, if necessary, the vertebrae are stabilized using a screw-rod system. This is followed by targeted follow-up treatment with antibiotics to eliminate any remaining pathogens.
Rehab and aftercare
After the acute phase, the rehabilitation period begins, which is particularly important for your long-term recovery. At the Nuhr Medical Center, you will receive a rehabilitation program tailored to your needs.
Our physiotherapists will help you to rebuild your mobility and muscle strength. Occupational therapy is all about mastering everyday tasks independently again. Even if you are still experiencing pain, experienced pain therapists are on hand to help you find suitable solutions.
We also offer psychological support, especially if the illness has caused anxiety or uncertainty. Good mental stability is just as important for recovery as physical strength.
Our nutritional experts will be happy to advise you on how you can additionally support your healing with a balanced and anti-inflammatory diet. Supplementary naturopathic treatments such as packs, massages or medical relaxation procedures will help you to regain your balance.
Our aim is for you to regain confidence in your body step by step, to feel stable and stronger and to be able to shape your everyday life in a self-determined way. We support you with time, expertise and genuine attention.
What can you do yourself?
Even if vertebral inflammation needs to be treated medically, you can do a lot to help yourself recover. This first requires patience, as the healing process takes time.
Regular exercise within your capabilities helps to strengthen the back muscles and promote mobility. It is important to adapt the load to your individual situation and avoid overloading. Our therapists will support you with targeted exercises.
Also make sure you eat a healthy diet, drink enough fluids and get enough sleep. Small breaks and conscious moments of relaxation in everyday life also promote your regeneration. If you are taking medication, follow the instructions exactly and report any changes or side effects to your doctor in good time.
Last but not least, it is helpful to deal openly with worries or fears. Talking to relatives or doctors can provide relief and help to develop confidence.
By dealing with the disease in an active, informed and mindful way, you can do a lot to regain confidence in your body and find your way back to a self-determined life step by step.
What is the prognosis for vertebral inflammation?
Spondylitis is a serious condition that requires rapid and targeted treatment. The earlier it is detected, the better the chances of recovery. In many cases, the infection can be completely cured with the right treatment. However, it is important to continue to take good care of the body after the acute phase so that no long-term consequences such as chronic pain or restricted mobility develop.
At the Nuhr Medical Center, we accompany you closely through all phases of treatment. Our medical and therapeutic teams work hand in hand to stabilize your spine and at the same time restore your mobility, independence and enjoyment of life. We take the time to respond to your individual needs and work with you to find a way back to an active everyday life.
Treatment & Therapy
In most cases, back pain is caused by wear and tear, as well as non-specific pain, the cause of which cannot be immediately identified by X-ray diagnostics or magnetic resonance imaging, but which requires a detailed clinical or physical examination.
Exercise therapy is often the best remedy, because very often the complaints are due to a lack of exercise and incorrect strain. Avoiding stress and distancing yourself from your everyday environment and its movements can also do you good.
The team of doctors at the NUHR Medical Center works in a multimodal and multiprofessional way and specializes in pain of all kinds, including back pain. We not only treat the symptoms, but also get to the bottom of the cause. Medication is only used where it is appropriate and necessary. However, our focus is clearly on special forms of therapy that are individually tailored to each person. We call this the NUHR Med Concept. It is based on the three pillars of individuality, intensity and regularity of therapies. This can be, for example, Dorn and Breuss spinal therapy or Tilscher back training.
We are also specialists in the field of arsonvalization, which involves working with electrical currents. Kinesio taping can also stimulate the skin receptors and stabilize muscle tension. We offer individual programs for expectant mothers.
