Sometimes the body needs more than rest and protection – it needs targeted touch that releases blockages, relieves tension and restores inner balance. Healing massages are an effective method of achieving just that. They are not a luxury, but a medically sound form of therapy that is used specifically for physical complaints and functional limitations.
At the Nuhr Medical Center, healing massages are an important part of our holistic treatment approach. They are not used in isolation, but are embedded in an individually tailored therapy concept that takes into account your physical symptoms as well as your personal life situation.
Our massage therapists work closely with the medical and therapeutic team. Each treatment is carefully coordinated, monitored and adapted as required – whether to reduce pain, relieve muscular tension, improve mobility or support chronic complaints such as osteoarthritis, back pain or fibromyalgia.
What are healing massages?
Remedial massages are medically recognized massage techniques that have a targeted effect on specific complaints, body regions or functional disorders. In contrast to the classic wellness massage, which is primarily used for relaxation, the healing massage pursues a therapeutic goal. It activates the body’s own healing processes, improves blood and lymph circulation, relieves pain and helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system.
Various massage techniques are used at the Nuhr Medical Center, from classic partial and full body massages to connective tissue or segmental massages and reflexology techniques, for example for visceral or neurological complaints. Scar treatments and lymphatic drainage are also integrated into this area.
What distinguishes healing massages from wellness massages?
The most important difference lies in the aim of the treatment. A wellness massage is designed to promote general well-being, reduce stress and gently relax the muscles. It is usually carried out without any medical indication.
A healing massage, on the other hand, is part of a medically supervised therapy concept. It is based on the individual diagnosis and is specifically tailored to pain points, muscular imbalances or functional restrictions. The treatment is carried out by specially trained specialists with additional medical training and may only be performed in Austria if prescribed by a doctor.
Healing massage is therefore not just about the “good feeling afterwards”, but also about measurable therapeutic progress, for example in cases of chronic neck tension, after slipped discs or to support rehabilitation after operations.
What forms of healing massage are there?
Various manual and instrumental massage techniques as well as supplementary applications are used:
Classic healing massage
Classic therapeutic massage is one of the best-known therapeutic massage techniques. It is used wherever there is muscular tension, pain or circulatory disorders, e.g. chronic neck, shoulder or back pain. Targeted hand movements loosen the muscles, promote blood circulation and stimulate the metabolism. Many patients experience noticeable relief, improved mobility and a pleasant feeling of warmth in the treated area after just a few treatments.
Special massages
In addition to the classic healing massage, we offer a range of specialized massage forms that have a targeted effect on specific complaints or body systems:
Lymphatic drainage
This gentle technique supports the drainage of tissue fluid via the lymphatic system. It is often used to treat swelling after operations, injuries or chronic lymphatic drainage disorders. It is also used successfully for lipoedema or to support the immune system.
Connective tissue massage
This form of massage works via so-called reflex zones in the connective tissue of the back. Internal organs can also be positively influenced through targeted stimuli. It is often used for functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, gynecological complaints or chronic pain.
Foot reflexology
The focus here is on the feet, as all organs and body systems are reflected in them. Targeted pressure on specific reflex points activates the body’s self-healing powers, stimulates the autonomic nervous system and supports inner balance.
Acupuncture massage
This form of massage is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. A massage stick is used to work along the energy channels, the so-called meridians. The aim is to release blockages, harmonize the flow of energy and increase general well-being.
Thermotherapy and packs
Heat can do a lot, as it relieves tension, promotes blood circulation and prepares the tissue optimally for the massage. At the Nuhr Medical Center, we use various heat applications, e.g. in the form of natural mud, fango or warm compresses. Targeted cold applications can also be helpful for acute inflammation. The combination of massage with heat or cold treatments increases the effectiveness and ensures deep relaxation.
Ultrasound and electrotherapy
These modern, instrument-based procedures complement traditional massage techniques. Ultrasound therapy uses sound waves that penetrate deep into the tissue and stimulate cell regeneration. The procedure is particularly suitable for treating tendon insertions, joints or deep-seated muscle tension.
Electrotherapy works with gentle electrical impulses that promote muscle activity, relieve pain and improve circulation. Both methods are pain-free, well tolerated and are specifically tailored to your symptoms.
Hydro- and balneotherapy
Water is one of the oldest remedies and is particularly effective when combined with a massage. In an underwater massage, massage jets are targeted at tense muscle groups while the body is relieved by the warm water. This leads to deep relaxation and promotes mobility.
Medicinal baths, for example with additives such as brine, sulphur or essential oils, complement the massage and help with skin diseases, rheumatism or vegetative complaints.
How does a healing massage work?
Before treatment begins, we take the time for a detailed consultation. The aim is to precisely identify your complaints, understand possible causes and select the right massage technique together with our team of therapists.
The massage itself takes place in a calm, protected atmosphere. Our experienced massage therapists tailor each massage to your individual needs, whether it is for muscular tension, joint pain or fatigue. The massage is often prepared or accompanied by soothing heat applications such as a heat pack to enhance the effect.
After the treatment, you have time to rest. This short break helps the body to better process the impulses of the treatment. Depending on the objective, healing massages are performed once or several times a week and combined with other therapeutic measures such as exercise therapy, physiotherapy or naturopathy.
How long does a healing massage take?
As a rule, a healing massage lasts between 20 and 50 minutes, depending on what is being treated and how large the affected area is. Sometimes additional applications such as heat packs or stretching exercises are also incorporated. This prolongs the entire therapy session somewhat, but often has an even better effect. We tailor the treatment time to your individual needs so that you get the best possible benefit.
How often should you have a healing massage?
It all depends on what complaints you have. If you suffer from acute tension or pain, e.g. in your back or neck, it can help to come for a massage two or three times a week, at least for a few weeks. For chronic or recurring problems, one regular treatment per week is often enough to provide long-term relief. A healing massage is also very useful as a preventative measure or as part of rehabilitation.
What should I bear in mind after a healing massage?
After a healing massage, it is good to take some time for yourself. Rest, drink plenty of water and avoid physical exertion for a few hours. This will help your body to process the stimulated processes well. If heat was used during the treatment, please take care not to cool down. We will be happy to give you additional tips if required.
When are healing massages used?
Healing massages are always used when there are physical complaints that need to be treated specifically. This can be the case for muscle tension, back or joint pain, but also after injuries or operations. Massages can also help to alleviate pain and improve mobility in chronic illnesses such as osteoarthritis or rheumatism.
Many people also seek treatment for headaches, migraines or stress-related complaints such as inner restlessness or sleep problems. Special massage techniques can also provide relief when the lymphatic system needs support, for example after operations or in the case of swelling.
Healing massages are therefore a useful addition to medical therapy, not only for physical but also for mental stress.
Does a healing massage also help with acute pain?
It can, depending on what the problem is. If the pain is caused by muscle tension, stress or poor posture, for example, a healing massage can help quickly. However, if the pain is very severe or occurs suddenly, a doctor should first clarify what exactly is behind it. In some cases, such as a slipped disc or inflammation, a massage is not immediately suitable. At the Nuhr Medical Center, we therefore work closely together as a team to find the right treatment for your situation.
Are there any contraindications?
Healing massages are generally well tolerated. However, they are contraindicated in the following cases or can only be carried out after consultation with the medical team:
- acute inflammations
- febrile illnesses
- Open wounds, skin diseases or thromboses
- certain neurological or cardiovascular disorders
We therefore carefully check whether a massage is suitable for you before every treatment. In this way, we ensure that you benefit as much as possible and safely.
