Water is one of the oldest remedies in the world. Hydrotherapy makes use of its diverse properties to gently but effectively support the body. At the Nuhr Medical Center, we use hydrotherapy specifically to alleviate complaints, promote healing processes and strengthen the general well-being of our patients in the long term. We attach great importance to tailoring each application to your needs, both for acute complaints and as part of holistic rehabilitation programs.
What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy refers to the therapeutic use of water in various temperatures and forms. Whether as an infusion, wrap, wash, bath or steam application: depending on the objective, water can exert various stimuli on the body through cold, heat or temperature changes. The method is steeped in tradition, as even the healers of antiquity were aware of the beneficial effects of water, which were later systematically developed further by Sebastian Kneipp. Today, it is a recognized, gentle treatment method in many medical concepts.
At the Nuhr Medical Center, hydrotherapy is firmly integrated into our holistic treatment concept. Our therapists use it to relieve pain as well as to strengthen the immune system and promote movement and relaxation. It can be used to support many illnesses, such as rheumatic complaints, states of exhaustion, chronic inflammation or functional circulatory problems.
How does hydrotherapy work?
The effect of hydrotherapy is achieved through targeted stimulation of the skin, blood vessels, nerves and organs. Cold applications promote blood circulation, reduce swelling and stimulate circulation. Warm applications help with muscle tension, relieve pain and bring calm to an overstimulated nervous system. Alternating warm stimuli in turn train the autonomic nervous system and strengthen the body’s ability to regulate itself. Steam baths and inhalations can clear the airways, stimulate the immune system and help to relieve inner tension.
Through the targeted combination of these stimuli, hydrotherapy can:
- Stabilize the circulation
- Relieve chronic pain
- Weaken inflammatory processes
- regulate muscle tension
- Strengthen the immune system
- stimulate the metabolism
- Promote mental balance
What role does temperature play in the treatment?
Temperature is one of the most important factors in hydrotherapy. Cold stimuli stimulate the circulation, strengthen the immune system and have a decongestant effect. Warm stimuli relax the muscles, promote blood circulation and relieve pain. Alternating between hot and cold, e.g. in alternating baths, also trains the regulatory ability of the autonomic nervous system.
What hydrotherapy applications are there?
At the NUHR Medical Center, we use the many possibilities of hydrotherapy to address the individual complaints and needs of our patients. Depending on the aim of the treatment, whether for pain relief, activation or relaxation, we select suitable applications. We always ensure that the therapy is well tolerated and fits harmoniously into your personal treatment concept.
Kneipp watering
These classic treatments consist of targeted jets of water that are directed over the legs, arms or the whole body. Depending on the temperature – cold, warm or alternating – jets can activate the circulation, stimulate the immune system or strengthen vein function. They have a refreshing effect, strengthen the immune system and are also very popular for preventing varicose veins or in cases of exhaustion.
Stanger bath
The Stanger bath is a medical electric bath in which you relax in warm water while a weak direct current is passed through your body. The combination of heat and electrical stimulation stimulates the circulation, relieves pain and relaxes the muscles. This treatment is particularly suitable for chronic back pain, arthrosis or rheumatic diseases.
Exercise pool
Under therapeutic guidance, you perform targeted movements in pleasantly temperate water. The natural buoyancy relieves the joints, promotes mobility and makes it possible to remain active even if you are in pain or have had an operation. The exercise pool is ideal for rehabilitation, muscle building and improving coordination, without overstraining.
Steam baths and inhalations
Warm steam has a beneficial effect on the upper respiratory tract, mucous membranes and bronchial tubes. Inhalations with pure brine or special additives help with chronic susceptibility to infections, allergies or for general regeneration of the respiratory tract. People with sensitive immune systems also benefit from this gentle treatment.
Colon hydrotherapy
This special form of colon cleansing is part of our holistic detox approach. It serves to gently flush the intestines, relieve the microbiome and strengthen the natural intestinal function. Many patients report an improved body sensation, more energy and a pleasant lightness in the abdomen after colon hydrotherapy.
Wraps, washes and packs
For local complaints such as joint inflammation, tension or circulatory problems, we use specific wraps or packs. Warm applications promote relaxation and blood circulation, while cool applications can alleviate inflammation and swelling. Alternating applications are also used to stimulate the body’s own temperature regulation and activate the metabolism.
What does hydrotherapy feel like?
The sensation during the application depends greatly on the temperature, the method and the aim of the treatment. Cold watering can initially trigger a strong reaction, but often feels refreshing and invigorating. Warm applications, on the other hand, have a calming, relaxing and soothing effect. Many people report a feeling of deep relaxation, improved circulation and more lightness in the body after hydrotherapy.
How often should hydrotherapy be used?
This depends on the symptoms, tolerance and the therapy goal. In acute phases or for regeneration, daily applications can be useful; for chronic complaints, two to three units per week are often sufficient.
When is hydrotherapy useful?
Hydrotherapy has a wide range of applications. It is particularly suitable for the accompanying treatment of:
- Chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatism or back pain
- muscular tension, restricted movement and after operations
- Functional complaints such as irritable bowel syndrome, headaches or exhaustion
- Susceptibility to infections, especially of the upper respiratory tract
- Circulatory regulation disorders and low blood pressure
- Sleep disorders or inner restlessness
Whether to stimulate, relax or support healing: with the targeted use of water, we create a tangible balance between body and mind at the Nuhr Medical Center. Our experienced therapists will accompany you carefully and personally to ensure that every treatment is not only medically effective but also beneficial.
Is hydrotherapy also suitable for older people?
Hydrotherapy is a gentle, well-tolerated procedure that has a positive effect on circulation, joints and metabolism, especially in old age. Many senior citizens find the water treatments pleasant and invigorating. It is important that the form of therapy is adapted, for example through moderate temperatures, shorter treatment times or supervised exercise baths.
What are the contraindications?
Even though hydrotherapy is considered a very well-tolerated and gentle treatment, there are certain situations in which it should be used with caution or not at all. For this reason, a detailed medical history is an integral part of our approach before starting any therapy at the Nuhr Medical Center. This is the only way we can ensure that the treatment is optimally tailored to your health situation.
Restrictions include acute febrile infections, as additional application of heat could put excessive strain on the circulation. Water applications should also be avoided in the case of open wounds or acute skin conditions in order to prevent irritation or to avoid exacerbating infections. Patients with serious cardiovascular diseases such as cardiac insufficiency or severe arterial circulatory disorders also require particularly careful clarification. Depending on the course of the pregnancy, it may be advisable to avoid certain treatments or to adjust the therapy accordingly. There may also be reasons to refrain from classic hydrotherapy in the case of advanced neurological diseases.
Individually embedded in the Nuhr Med Concept
At the Nuhr Medical Center, hydrotherapy is not seen as an isolated measure, but as part of a comprehensive, holistic therapy concept. This means that water treatments are planned and used in such a way that they can be harmoniously combined with other therapeutic components. The combination with exercise therapy, physiotherapeutic techniques, targeted nutritional advice and naturopathic procedures is particularly effective.
This results in an individual treatment concept that not only alleviates symptoms, but also activates your self-healing powers and strengthens your immune system. Whether for regeneration after illness, for chronic complaints or as a beneficial measure for stabilization – hydrotherapy at the Nuhr Medical Center is always tailored to your personal life situation.
